Marine Sharpshooter 4 is a First-Person Shooter (FPS) placing the player in the body of, obviously, a marine sharpshooter. As an FPS, the action is seen through the eyes of the marine himself, giving players a direct view of the action. Placing an emphasis on slow and methodical gun-play rather then normal "running and gunning," players will spend a great deal of time following the oft stated motto of the sniper: one shot, one kill.
The action centers around stopping various terrorist threats and axis-of-evil treachery. Entering enemy territory through air-drop, the main character is accompanied only by his spotter, a marine armed with a machine gun whose only job is to protect the sharpshooter and give him information on enemies in the area. In practice, the game plays out like a normal FPS; moving towards an objective (such as sabotaging a nuclear missile in Iran), you must kill the enemies before the enemies kill you. Where Marine Sharpshooter 4 differs is how these enemies are dealt with.
As the player sneaks through the level, the spotter will mark on the radar where he sees enemies. Taking aim with the sniper rifle from a great distance, players zoom in with the mounted scope placing the crosshairs over their target. Firing a single bullet results in the target dying. Through the strategic use of sneaking and shooting, players can wipe out entire enemy camps which allow them to continue on through the level.
Rated "M" by the ESRB, Marine Shapshooter 4 contains "Blood," "Violence," and "Strong Language". Since the game puts the player in the shoes of a sniper, players are tasked with killing unsuspecting enemies generally by shooting them in the head. When the bullets do pass through the enemy, there is a large spurt of blood, followed by the bad guy twitching as he falls to the ground. However, the bodies do not stick around for long, as they fade away after a short time, giving the game a slightly less realistic feel. Of course, since these enemies have no idea they are about to die, they can be heard having conversations while the player takes aim, some of which contain colorful language filled with swear words.
